Pennsylvania IRS Defense Lawyer

The IRS assesses penalties and interest if you fail to file a return, fall behind in filing, or fail to pay your taxes on time.  Interest fees continue to grow and compound the longer the problem is unresolved.  And unresolved tax liabilities can destroy your credit rating, effectively preventing you from owning a house or a car.

The IRS may also seize assets you currently own, including bank accounts and real estate.  If the IRS does not seize your real estate outright, it may file a lien against it, making it nearly impossible to sell.  If you receive income from wages, pension payments, or Social Security, the IRS can garnish your income until your tax debt, including fines and interest, is repaid.  Pennsylvania tax law attorneys, however, routinely negotiate with the IRS to provide tax relief, reduce the overall amount owed, and avoid the more severe civil penalties such as seizure, liens, and levies.

You could face criminal penalties

But late fees and interest may be the least of your worries if you are having trouble with the IRS.  Tax non-compliance can carry criminal penalties as well.  Although most cases are never prosecuted, the IRS will periodically file criminal charges against a delinquent taxpayer in order to maintain the constant threat of prosecution, and the threat alone is intimidating.  Criminal action can mean a year of incarceration in federal prison, a fine of 100,000 dollars, or both for each tax return you fail to file.  Knowingly filing a false tax return can carry a penalty of up to three years in federal prison, a fine of 250,000 dollars, or both.

The first step toward resolution of your taxation problems is to file a power of attorney naming an IRS defense lawyer as your legal representative.  This removes you from direct communication with the IRS and requires IRS agents to direct all future communications to your Pennsylvania tax lawyer.  After obtaining your file, we can either prepare and complete your tax return or returns or work with your regular accountant.  In the case of a liability, we will work with you and the IRS to negotiate a resolution through one of the methods available.

We can help

Tax problems do not go away.  And the longer you wait to face them, the greater the odds that you will be randomly selected to be a test case for prosecution.  Facing your problem now is better than having the IRS levy your wages, bank accounts, or Social Security and pension benefits, and it is certainly better than facing a jail term.
